Finding Nails in Wood with Neodymium Magnets

Find Nails in Wood with Strong Neodymium Magnets

Magnets can be used to find nails in hardwood floors or reclaimed wood by detecting the presence of metal beneath the surface.

By moving a magnet over the wood surface and paying close attention to the areas where the magnet is more strongly attracted, it is possible to locate metal objects that may be hidden. In the case of nails, the magnet will be attracted to the metal nail and can help locate it beneath the surface of the wood.

How do I locate metal objects in wood?

To use a strong neodymium sphere magnet to locate nails in wood, you can follow these steps:

  1. Hold the magnet near the wood and roll it slowly over the surface.
  2. Pay attention to areas where the magnet seems to be more strongly attracted. This may indicate the presence of a metal object, such as a nail or screw, underneath the surface.
  3. When you have found an area where the magnet is strongly attracted, mark the spot with a pencil or piece of tape.

Keep in mind that the magnet will likely not be strong enough to lift the metal object out of the wood, so you will still need to use a tool to extract it once you have located it.

What size magnet do I need?

We recommend the 5/8 inch or 3/4 inch sphere magnets for locating nails and screws inside of wood. The spherical space allows the magnet to easily roll around on the wood surface and pin point the exact location of any metal objects.
