Will neodymium magnets rust?

Neodymium magnets are prone to rusting if they are exposed to moisture or high humidity environments. The rate at which neodymium magnets will rust will depend on a number of factors, including the humidity level, the temperature, and the presence of corrosive agents.

In general, neodymium magnets will rust more quickly in humid environments or if they are exposed to corrosive agents, such as saltwater or acidic substances. The rusting process can also be accelerated by high temperatures, which can cause the magnet to dry out and become more susceptible to corrosion.

To prevent neodymium magnets from rusting, it is important to store them in a dry place and to protect them from moisture as much as possible. If the magnets do get wet, it is important to dry them off as soon as possible to prevent rust from forming.

Corrosion Resistant Coatings

In some cases, it may be necessary to use neodymium magnets with a corrosion resistant coating such as black epoxy or plastic. This can be especially important in high humidity environments and outdoor applications, or if the magnets will be exposed to corrosive agents. For applications which require the magnets to be washed, we have sewing magnets encased in PVC which protects the magnet from water damage.

Choosing the Right Coating

It can be difficult to select the best coating for your specific application due to the numerous factors that can impact a magnet's durability and performance. You can always get in touch with our magnet experts if you have any questions or want assistance selecting the right coating or magnet. We will be delighted to assist you in making the best choice for your needs.
