What does the N rating on neodymium magnets mean?

The magnet grade, or N rating, refers to the Maximum Energy Product of the material from which the magnet is made; it refers to the maximum strength the material can be magnetized to hold permanently.

Generally speaking, neodymium magnets range from N35 to N55 in grade. The higher the grade, or N number, the incrementally stronger the magnet will be.

The grades of neodymium magnets that we normally carry are N42, N48 and N52, a rating that is generally measured in Tesla metrics or units of Gauss Oersted (MGOe).

A magnet of grade N42 has a Maximum Energy Product of Gauss 42 MGOe, while an N52, at 52 MGOe, would be incrementally stronger.  

It is important to note that the N rating is a measure of the maximum energy product of the magnet, and it does not necessarily reflect the actual strength of the magnet in a particular application. The strength of a rare earth magnet will depend on a number of factors, including the size, shape, and grade.
